Deutschlandstipendium at the TU Berlin

Number of Scholarships at the TU Berlin

How many Deutschlandstipendium scholarships are awarded at the TU Berlin?

Over the last years, there has been a consistent awarding of slightly over 100 scholarships per academic year.

Study abroad

Do Deutschlandstipendium payments continue during a period studying abroad as part of a degree program?

Studying abroad as part of a degree program can only be supported by the scholarship if the student is not receiving any other talent- or performance-based scholarships during his or her time abroad (such as a full scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service, or DAAD).

If you are receiving a full DAAD scholarship for your stay abroad, you may apply to take a leave of absence from the Deutschlandstipendium. In that case, the Deutschlandstipendium payments will be paused for the duration of the DAAD. However, it is quite possible to receive payments from a Deutschlandstipendium alongside a partial DAAD scholarship.

No matter what, it is stringently required that you notify the Deutschlandstipendium office of your study abroad on your own initiative.

You can find a list of scholarships that are permitted in parallel with the Deutschlandstipendium here (German only).

International Students

May international students also apply for a Deutschlandstipendium?

Yes. International students and prospective students of the TU Berlin are equally entitled to apply for a Deutschlandstipendium.

Selection Panel

Who makes decisions about the awarding of scholarships?

The selection panel includes one member per faculty (3 professors, 2 research associates, 2 student representatives).
The scholarships are awarded based on anonymous application materials. The funding providers are not involved in the selection process.

Selection Criteria

What criteria are used to determine who is awarded a Deutschlandstipendium?

The scholarships are awarded based on talent and performance. In addition to past performance and previous accomplishments, the award decisions also take into account community involvement, willingness to take responsibility, and special social, family, or personal circumstances arising, for example, from family background, international heritage, or a refugee experience. (See section three of the Scholarship Act [StipG] especially Guideline 8, para. 2)

BAföG Student Grants

Will the Deutschlandstipendium be deducted from my BAföG grant?

No. Both funding options may be utilized at the same time without any deductions.

The End of the Funding Period (Prematurely)

Under what circumstances does a Deutschlandstipendium funding end prematurely?

Funding is terminated at the end of the month in which the scholarship recipient:

-Successfully completes university studies; this is considered to take place when the student is informed of the full results of the successfully completed educational stage or, at the latest, two months after the month in which the last examination was taken
-Changes disciplines
-Discontinues studies
-Is exmatriculated

Leave of Absence

Do Deutschlandstipendium payments continue during a leave of absence?

If the leave of absence occurs due to a study abroad or a required internship, it is generally possible to continue funding despite a leave of absence.

Applying for the Deutschlandstipendium

When can I apply for the Deutschlandstipendium at the TU Berlin?

The Deutschlandstipendium is only awarded at the TU Berlin beginning in winter semester.
You can find all important information about the application on our website under the menu item Call for Applications.

Approval for the Deutschlandstipendium

How and when will I find out whether my application for the Deutschlandstipendium was successful?

All applicants receive a written letter of acceptance or rejection by postal mail. Because this is a multistage process with occasional second-choice positions, not all letters can be sent out at the same time.

We kindly request that you do not inquire about the status of your application.

Double Funding

Is it possible to receive funding from two or more scholarships at once?

It is not possible to receive material funding from two or more talent- or performance-based scholarships at once. One exception is if the monthly total of the talent- or performance-based scholarship is less than 30 euros per month on average.
Click here for a list of permitted and prohibited scholarships to receive at the same time as the Deutschlandstipendium, provided by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).

Applications by First-Semester and Prospective Students

I’m starting my degree program in the next winter semester. Can I apply for the Deutschlandstipendium as a new student?

Yes. New students may also apply for the Deutschlandstipendium. If you are applying to degree programs at multiple schools, however, you also need to apply for the Deutschlandstipendium at each one. In general, a Deutschlandstipendium at the TU Berlin requires a valid enrollment for the winter semester following the application period.

Changing Disciplines or Universities

I’m planning to change degree programs. Does changing subject areas affect my Deutschlandstipendium?

Yes. Because the scholarship is awarded based on your degree program, the scholarship will expire at the end of the month in which you changed courses of study.

I’m planning to transfer to another university. Does transferring universities affect my scholarship?

Yes. If the scholarship recipient transfers to another university during the grant period, the scholarship will continue for one more semester according to the grant.

Who sponsors the Deutschlandstipendium scholarships at the TU Berlin?

A list of sponsors in the current sponsorship period is available here.

(Maximum) Duration of Funding

For how long may I receive the scholarship (at the most)?

The maximum duration of funding is based on the standard time to complete a degree in the current degree program. A scholarship grant is initially awarded for one year and can be renewed for up to the standard period of study at maximum.

Once per year, “performance evaluations” are conducted to verify the conditions for continued funding and thus the renewal of the Deutschlandstipendium.

(See performance evaluation.)

Funding Type and Amount

How high are the scholarship payments? How is the scholarship financed?

The Deutschlandstipendium amounts to €300 per month and is initially granted for a 12-month period. €150 of the monthly funding is covered by private sponsors (companies, foundations, associations, and individuals); the other €150 is financed by the German federal government.

Do scholarship payments need to be paid back after the scholarship is completed?

No. Unlike student loans (BAföG), scholarship payments do not need to be paid back.

Scholarship Prerequisites

Who is eligible to apply for a Deutschlandstipendium? What are the prerequisites for support?

In general, a scholarship is possible if the (prospective) student is enrolled in a public or state-recognized institution of higher education and has at least two semesters remaining in the standard period of study. In addition to bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, second or complementary undergraduate degrees and work-and-study programs are eligible for funding.

Laws and Regulations

Which laws apply to the Deutschlandstipendium at the TU Berlin?

The legal basis for the scholarship program at the TU Berlin consists of the Scholarship Program Act (Stipendienprogramm-Gesetz, or StipG), the Scholarship Program Regulations (Stipendienprogramm-Verordnung, or StipV), and the Technische Universität Berlin’s Guidelines on awarding Deutschlandstipendien.

Child Benefit

Does the Deutschlandstipendium affect child benefit?

No. In general, the Deutschlandstipendium does not effect the receipt of child benefit. Since the Tax Simplication Act was passed in 2011, the income of adult children is not checked until they complete their first professional apprenticeship or undergraduate degree. Please also keep in mind the Federal Ministry of Finance’s December 7, 2011 notice regarding Section 32 para. 4 of the Income Tax Act (EStG).

Performance Assessment

What is a performance assessment?

At least once per year, the universities verify whether the scholar’s talent and performance justifies renewing the scholarship. In the grant confirmation, they specify the deadline and type of documentation that the scholar must provide to enable this assessment. Special personal or family circumstances that might have a bearing on the performance are taken into account (See StipV Section 3).
The performance assessment at TU Berlin generally takes place from mid-May to mid-June under consideration of examination results from the preceding winter semester.

Doctoral Students

Are doctoral students also eligible for Deutschlandstipendium funding?

No. Unfortunately, the scholarship does not fund doctoral students.

Legal Recourse

Is there any legal recourse vis-à-vis the Deutschlandstipendium?

No. The Deutschlandstipendium is not subject to legal claims. It is up to the universities whether they offer someone the Deutschlandstipendium. At the TU Berlin, the selection panel makes the decisions on awarding scholarships. The decision is made based on set selection criteria, laws, and regulations.

How to Treat the Scholarship for Tax Purposes

Does the Deutschlandstipendium count as taxable income?

No. The Deutschlandstipendium at the TU Berlin does not count as taxable income.

A copy of your letter of acceptance for the Deutschlandstipendium can be used as proof for the German tax office (tax exemption is cited in the first paragraph on the second page).

Studienkolleg (Preparatory School)

Is it possible for students attending the Studienkolleg to receive funding through the Deutschlandstipendium?

No. Funding of students attending the Preparatory School is, unfortunately, not possible. Funding is only available for students matriculated on Bachelor’s, Master’s and Diploma degree programs at the TU Berlin (see also "Scholarship Prerequisites").

There is, however, the possibility to apply for funding through the Deutschlandstipendium as part of the process of applying for a place on a degree program for those students wishing to subsequently study at the TU Berlin (see "Applications by First-Semester and Prospective Students").

Part-Time Program

Are students in part-time degree programs eligible for the Deutschlandstipendium?

Yes. Part-time students may also apply for a Deutschlandstipendium.

Housing Benefit

Is it possible to receive "Wohngeld" (housing benefit) at the same time as the Deutschlandstipendium?

Yes, it is possible to receive "Wohngeld" (housing benefit) in addition to the Deutschlandstipendium. However, recipients of housing subsidies must keep in mind that half of the scholarship counts towards annual income. If you are unsure, please consult your housing benefit office.

What does it mean if my Deutschlandstipendium is “earmarked”?

Private sponsors can earmark the scholarships they co-sponsor for specific subject areas or degree programs. The matching public funding follows this private earmark. Up to two-thirds of the scholarships newly granted each year may have earmarks from their private sponsors (StipG Section 11 (3)).
A list of all current earmarks in effect at the TU Berlin is available here (see "purpose limitation").

Second Undergraduate Degree

Can a second undergraduate degree also be funded by a Deutschlandstipendium?

Yes, second undergraduate degrees are also eligible for funding.
